Biographical / Historical
Medals created for specific events include the Augustus Saint-Gaudens architectural relief commemorating a play performed by residents of Cornish, New Hampshire, in a celebration of the artists’ twenty years of residence there. The medal was given to participants to thank them for their performances, and he gave small, bronzed silver versions inscribed to participants. There is a larger, bronze, gilded version of this plaque made for the playwright, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the American Sculpture department. The medallion included in this collection is one of the small, bronzed silver versions likely intended for an actor or musician in the play.
