Biographical / Historical

The Society of Medallists had a contest, usually twice a year, where they would provide a popular theme among their committee for up and coming (usually American, but that evolved in later years) sculptors to submit proposals for. Beyond the pre-selected theme, it is said that artists had complete creative freedom. The Society’s committee voted on the best one, and had the medal struck by the Medallic Art Company. This method was modeled after the previously short-lived Circle of Friends of the Medallion, of which Society of Medallists’ co-founder, George Dupont Pratt, was a member. The themes chosen were often allegorical in nature.
