Biographical / Historical
Some of the medals in this collection served as awards for proficiency in school subjects, such as drawing or portrait painting. Some are awards for items displayed at the mid 19th century Mechanics fairs held in the hall of MICA's Market Place building; for example, a steam engine and a piano. There are many examples of a medal designed by Hans Schuler for the Maryland Institute's centennial year in 1925-26, some of which are inscribed as awards.
